Negative Body Image & What to Do About It

Almost all of us wish for a way to fix ourselves physically to feel more confident and “perfect”. Body image is all about how you perceive yourself and not how you actually look. Women all over the world undergo different procedures in an attempt to gain a flawless appearance. While it is normal for one to feel unsatisfied with one or two features, feeling repulsed by your appearance, isn’t.

People with negative body image might appear perfectly normal to others. However, in their mind, they feel inadequate. You do not have to be overweight to have a negative body image. Even men and women with an average, healthy weight can go through this painful process.

Here are five steps you can follow to get rid of negative body image issues:

  1. Learn to Identify Your Triggers

Do you feel bad about your body after watching movies? Or do you feel this way after talking to a particular person? Whatever it is, you need to find out what triggers your negative feelings. If there is a certain person who makes you feel bad about how you look, you should stay away from him/her. Removing toxic people from your life is an important step towards healing from a negative body image.

  1. Show Gratitude

Many people out there are suffering from serious health conditions. Express gratitude for your health and being able to live your life. Start counting things that you like about your body and list them down. By focusing more on what you have rather than on what you don’t have will help you become more positive.

  1. Exercise Regularly

Chemicals like serotonin and dopamine are “feel good” neurotransmitters that your body releases when you engage in any physical activity. Apart from the energy surge you feel after exercise, you also feel confident about your body. You have a sense of accomplishment after completing the session, which propels you towards a healthy body image.

  1. Control Your Thoughts

Do not let your mind wander. Make sure you are in control of your thoughts at all times. If there is a voice inside your head that keeps telling you “you are not enough”, put an end to it. Instead, you should fill your mind with positive thoughts about yourself. Remind yourself that you are worthy enough. Think about what you wish to accomplish in life and what your goals are. Remember, your self-worth depends on the way you think. Therefore, make a conscious effort to think positive.

  1. Seek Support

Surround yourself with people who love you for who you are. You do not need people that point out your flaws and make you feel bad about yourself. Remember that every individual has certain flaws and that is what makes us human. Hang out with people who appreciate you and help you live your life to the fullest.

Celebrate every day of your life because life is too short to spend it worrying about problems that do not even exist. Practice self-care and self-love, and remind yourself of all the great things you accomplished.
